Monday, February 16, 2013 Grateful Dead | Caution - Don't Stop On Tracks One of the most important rules in life is don't do anything that will stop you from working on your current project. I saw this advice when I was about to do something important. I was on the verge of making a mistake and ruining a major part of my project, and I was nervous. In particular, I was about to reorder some functions in a component. I knew what I was about to do was a huge mistake, but I couldn't quite tell why. The reason was that I didn't understand the relationship between the functions, and I wasn't sure why the new order was a problem. The advice wasn't: don't change anything until you understand exactly what the consequences are of changing it. Instead, the advice was: don't do anything that will stop you from working on your current project. The reason was that I needed to finish my current project before I could understand what the problem was. If I hadn't made a mistake, I would have had time to thoroughly understand the problem. With the advice in mind, I made a decision to leave the functions as they were, and if there was an issue, it would show up after I finished my current project. I know what I was about to do wasn't a good idea. I just couldn't understand why. It wasn't until I had finished my current project that I understood the problem. The advice was right, it was just written for a situation that you didn't have.
